While exploring the craft she was exposed to the male-dominated glass industry in Firozabad, the center of the glass industry in India.During her work with the artisans on her designs, Reshmi realized that, though the artisans have mastered the craft of glass making, which is one of the most beautiful and challenging material, they don’t take pride in their work as there is no appreciation for their craft in India. Also, glass as a material gets associated with commercial and industrial material but not as the art material. Even the design and art colleges in the country have not put any substantial effort to recognize the glass’s inherent strength and beauty by introducing the material as one of the medium of expression.
These facts prompted Reshmi to create a platform for both “Glass” and the “artisans of Firozabad”, where both can get their due respect and recognition in India. She began her groundwork to set up the studio, by gathering information, required tools and machines while visiting different countries for glass conferences and glass educational tours. When it came to build the studio and creating the facility, she took care of all possible health and safety measures to make a welcoming and secure place for everybody.
“Creativity needs courage” – by establishing India’s first comprehensive public access glass art studio “Glass Sutra”, she has proved that she is both Creative and Courageous. As an organization, principal objectives of Glass Sutra are:
• The initiative to promote education, awareness, and appreciation for glass art and craft in India.
• Research and development towards new ideas, creativity, and design.
• Provide a platform for artisans from Firozabad for skill development and exposure.
• Social outreach programme for underprivileged, especially the girl child.
It is a one-of-a-kind creative space, built over an area of 5000 sq. ft. in New Delhi for all the art lovers in the country.
The studio has a comfortable lounge, conference room and a beautiful gallery. It strives to provide glass artists, enthusiasts of this art form, and exponents from other creative fields, the liberty to follow their passion and indulge in their artistic expression.
The studio is capable of hosting activities such as team building programmes, educational initiatives, and group events through the different processes of Glass Making such as Hot Glass, Kiln-formed glass, Flame work and Cold work. The workshop area, which can accommodate up to 70 participants at a time depending on the programme, is designed giving utmost priority to health and safety. A group of qualified Instructors will be present at the workshop to assist, guide and supervise the participants through the programmes.”
